What you don't always need is all the extra openings, attachment points, straps and buckles. 

The Exped Radical 60 can be configured as a travel backpack  which is comfortable to carry around. The straps can also be moved into a top attachment position which is less comfortable for long stints on the back but makes it quick and easy to convert to a duffel when hopping on and off transport. Finally you can use it as a straight up duffel bag with one or no straps.
